Memorial Day Parade in Thomasville, North Carolina honors Serice Men and Women

The sign on the Speakers Gazebo says "Heros, They Gave All for American Freedom" Special seating was provided for family members of fallen service men and women. The family members were escorted to their seats by members of the Young Marines doing Community Service because it is the right thing to do.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; Memorial Day, Why do we celebrate it? Why is it more often called Memorial Day Weekend

First I will ask this question. Does anyone truly care? Do you truly care?<br /><br />I do. I am a part of the "Quiet Few", who still believe in honoring those individuals who paid the ultimate price to provide you and me with a place to live where we are free to do most anything that doesn't infringe on our fellow American's Freedom. What does Memorial Day have to do with it?<br /><br />Here is a short history of Memorial Day. It is one of the few holidays that most agree that can not be traced to one person, one city, or to one originator.<br /><br />Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day.<br /><br />Memorial Day was originally a day for honoring Civil War dead by decorating their graves. Both Northern and Southern States celebrated the occasion. The day for the celebration was never defined by the North or the South and States celebrated it by their own choice. Memorial Day was celebrated as a day of reconciliation and coming together to honor those who gave their all and it mattered not whether they wore the Blue or the Gray.<br /><br />There is evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's (<a href="http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/award97/ncdhtml/hasmhome.html"><span style="color: black;">Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920</span></a><span style="color: black;">). </span><br /><br />Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states.<br /><br />The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war).<br /><br />In 1915, inspired by the poem "In Flanders Field" Moina Michael replied with her own poem. <br /><div style="text-align: center;">We cherish too, the Poppy red<br />That grows on fields where valor led,<br />It seems to signal to the skies<br />That blood of heroes never dies.</div><div align="left" style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>Afterwards, Moina Michael conceived of an idea to wear red poppies on Memorial day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war.<br /><br />Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966. <br /><br />It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee. <br /><br />The Holiday Act of 1971 states that Memorial Day will be celebrated on the last Monday of May, thereby ensuring that Memorial Day will create a long weekend holiday. <br /><br />A white house memorandum to the heads of the Executive Branches of our Government in 2000 announced the program called "National Moment of Remembrance" who's purpose was to ask all Americans to voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect at 3 P.M. local time on Memorial day.<br /><br />The "Memorial Day Weekend" which was ensured by the "Holiday Act of 1971" has lost it's meaning for most Americans. Many Americans today, have forgotten the purpose of it's origin and are more into the long holiday weekend. Most believe that it is a weekend to show respect to all of their own family who have passed away. <br /><br />Many people feel that the Holiday Act of 1971 is most responsible for Americans forgetting the meanings and traditions of Memorial Day.  There are groups that believe that instead of it being celebrated on the last Monday in May, that it should be celebrated once again on the 30th of May. Actually, Senator Inouye from Alaska introduced bill "S 189 to the Senate" which proposes to restore the traditional day of observance to May 30th, no matter what day it falls on. Representative Gibbons introduced House (H.R. 1474) for the same purpose. These bills were introduced in 1999, but no further action on the bills has occurred. <br /><br />We sincerely need to observe Memorial Day and honor those that have fallen to preserve our way of life here in America and around the World. <br /><br />There is no need to wait till Memorial Day to have a moment of silence for those who have fallen in defense of our country. Acetaminophen combines with other drugs in a variety of over-the-counter cold, flu and sinus medicines including Theraflu, Triaminic and Sudafed. Acetaminophen also appears in combination with an opioid — a narcotic— in prescription medicines like Vicodin (with hydrocodone) or in Percocet (with oxycodone). <br /><br /><br /><br />ED visits related to abuse of acetaminophen products were not included in the study, which <br /><br />appears online and in the June issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.<br /><br /><br /><br />Young people ages 15 to 24 are at highest risk for suicide attempts or acts of self-harm involving acetaminophen, the researchers found. “Because these data are based on ED records, it is often difficult to determine exactly what motivated the patient — if they had a premeditated plan to end their life with an overdose or if the overdose was an impulsive act,” said Budnitz, medical officer at the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion.<br /><br /><br /><br />Among the others in this age group, 75 percent of ED visits occurred because they went above the recommended acetaminophen dosage in search of quicker or stronger relief. <br /><br /><br /><br />Overdoses by people who think more medicine is better points to a deep knowledge gap and need for better consumer education about a familiar drug, said Henry Spiller, director of the Kentucky Regional Poison Center. He has no affiliation with the study.<br /><br /><br /><br />“We frequently see that with abdominal pain or tooth pain. They can’t get to the dentist for a day or two so just try to manage the pain themselves. Some actually come in with frank liver failure,” Spiller said. “I think they’re unaware that they’re risking something as bad as liver failure—especially with tooth pain.”<br /><br /><br /><br />Taken correctly, acetaminophen is safe and effective, but the margin between a therapeutic and a dangerous dose is smaller than many people might realize.<br /><br /><br /><br />“The toxic dose depends on the age of the person, how much they weigh and their liver function, but in general, 10 to 15 grams can cause what’s called hepatic necrosis, which is basically the liver cells dying,” Budnitz said. “So 10 grams — an extra-strength tablet is 500 milligrams of acetaminophen — that’s about 20 tablets.”<br /><br /><br /><br />The poison center might recommend to people who take acetaminophen continually that they should instead alternate with another pain medicine, like ibuprofen, Spiller said.<br /><br /><br /><br />“If you double or triple the dose of acetaminophen, and you take it for several days, you will cause significant liver problems,” Budnitz said. Rather than a sudden, dramatic reaction, overdose symptoms often occur later, he said. “If untreated, the acetaminophen toxicity can take days, maybe weeks, to manifest itself.<br /><br /><br /><br />“Depending on the person, and how much they took and what treatments they get, the outcomes range from full recovery to possible death without a liver transplant,” Budnitz said. “If you or someone you know did take an overdose of acetaminophen, the first thing to do is to call the poison center (1-800-222-1222), follow their advice, and, if directed, go immediately to the emergency department for an evaluation.”<br /><br /><br /><br />The good news: “With prompt treatment most patients fully recover, especially children, because acetaminophen does have an antidote. If given promptly, that can protect the liver, ” Budnitz said.<br /><br /><br /><br />Overdoses caused by extra doses for symptom relief or other mistakes were more likely to involve over-the-counter products in people ages 15 to 24, and opioid-containing acetaminophen products in people older than 39. <br /><br /><br /><br />For those who require the antidote, it is not as simple as taking a pill. “NAC comes in oral and intravenous form,” Spiller said. “NAC is sulfur-based and it smells like rotten eggs. It’s tough to get kids to drink it.” Others who overdose might undergo “gastric decontamination” with an unpleasant charcoal mixture or by having their stomach pumped.<br /><br /><br /><br />The study analyzed two years of data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System to estimate the number of annual ED visits nationwide. Well, William Morris has been mentioned on more than one occasion and one of the top interior designer Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen showed viewers how interior design and garden design are singing from the same hymn sheet so to speak. He refer to choosing garden furniture in the same way you would choose your sofa and other soft furnishings.<br /><br />Of course most for us know Lawrence for his flamboyance and forward thinking interiors and room make-overs. His love of <a href=http://www.terrysfabrics.co.uk/cat/bedding/luxury-bedding-set/>luxury bedding</a> to transform even the most tired looking bedroom is synonymous to his interiors; along with mixing colours which can be inspired from nature itself – such as bright poppy red curtains with lime greens to create chic and stylish interiors.<br /><br />The presenters of the flower show also made copious remarks about the Arts & Crafts movement (William Morris) and how the new artisan garden category has brought new structuring, colours and planting into gardens which can be viewed from even the humblest sized people's windows.<br /><br />The more you look into gardening the more you'll see just how it influences interior design year on year and through the seasons.<br /><br />Image: Blog Graham Brown

Beach Theme Bedroom<br /><br />Using accessories is a fun way to accent your bedroom for a beach theme. You will find that you can dramatically change the look of your room simply by making small changes with the accents. See how easy it is to get a designer beach theme look in your bedroom without shelling out the big bucks.<br /><br />If you're not sure exactly what you want in your beach desing, try looking in decorating magazines and books to get a flavor of the accessories you would like to see in your bedroom. For keeping the beach look consistent, you'll have to limit yourself to only purchase the accessories that match your theme.<br /><br />Colors for a beach décor should make you think of the beach. Light and breezy with lots of blues and maybe even some yellows. If you prefer neutral tones think of the beige of beach sand and the color of shells.<br /><br />Incorporate sea shells, ocean prints, and other seaside accents that will help bring out the beach in your bedroom. You should group your accessories in odd numbers. It always looks nice if your groupings consists of tall and short accessories mixed together. An interesting group of accents might consists of some shells aside a nice beach theme frame and a taller lamp.<br /><br />Use beach theme prints and photos on your walls to establish the theme throughout your bedroom. Many people do not know how to correctly hang a piece of art and this makes a big difference to the visual appeal. Whether you are hanging a large oil painting or a small print, the middle of the piece should be at eye level. If you have a large piece of artwork you can try using it as a headboard. When hanging prints or photos behind a table, always place them 7 to 10 inches above the table. Hang pictures in circular, triangular, or rectangular geometric groupings to add interest.<br /><br />When accessorizing your bedroom don't forget about the lighting. When purchasing lamps make sure to buy ones that go with the beach theme you want to create. For beach style lighting try using clear glass lamps filled with shells or figural light house shaped lamps.<br /><br />Area rugs can define a space and pull your bedroom together. Rest furniture completely on the rug for a warmer effect. Only use rugs that go with your beach accessories.<br /><br />Using pillows can add interest as well.
